The Edinburgh TV Festival is the home of independent debate in TV. Each year, we offer more than 60 keynotes, debates, and masterclasses, plus scores of networking opportunities. We draw a crowd of over 2,000 industry professionals from across the globe who join us to learn, connect, and have fun.
Our editorial independence means we don’t have to compromise on the content we deliver to our delegates. Our programmes are created with a focus on quality and relevance, and our sessions are famous for being provocative, informative, and entertaining.
2025 marks a landmark year for us as we stage the 50th MacTaggart Lecture, the centrepiece of the Festival. No other festival does what we do on our scale, and we look forward to welcoming you in August.
Join Advisory Chair, Jane Tranter, and Creative Director, Rowan Woods, to talk through this year's programme. Michael Sheen In Conversation With Jane Tranter follows directly after this session without a break.
TV shows are no longer confined to the TV screen. Whether on social or gaming platforms, they're engaging with a Gen Z audience in the places where they already spend hours a day. From Eurovision to Hell's Kitchen on Roblox to Rap Game UK's first clash in Fortnite, this session shows how broadcasters are turning IP into immersive, talent-led games. Featuring the creators behind the Elton John and Eurovision activations, we'll unpack how to build playable worlds to accompany your next show - and why you should be thinking about this.

British TV is in the midst of generational transformation. Legacy broadcasters deal with a change of leadership as declining reach and market forces tear old models apart. Mergers are being touted, streamers' belts are tightening and production companies are going under. The pressure grows on broadcasters to prove their digital strategies and the brave new world of unregulated and unrestricted creator content demands closer examination. A year has passed since Ros Atkins delivered a signature explainer to forensically dissect the TV and content landscape and he returns to interrogate the most urgent, uncomfortable questions facing the industry. A panel of industry leaders and pioneers step up to an unflinching debate as narratives are cross examined, assumptions challenged and futures questioned. We'll ask not just what's broken, but what can be fixed and by whom?

The Festival celebrates its 50th anniversary by launching the 'Edinburgh Fellowship', which honours an individual whose work has had significant cultural and creative impact, and recognises their influence on both the international industry and television as an artform. We're delighted to award this inaugural honour to Shonda Rhimes in recognition of her long-standing, ground-breaking and hugely influential contribution to the TV industry.
One of television's most significant creative voices, Rhimes is an award-winning television creator, producer and author, as well as the CEO of the global media company, Shondaland. Rhimes has made a name for herself as the creator of hugely popular, long running series including Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, and Scandal; the success of which resulted in her being the first woman to have created three television dramas that have achieved the 100-episode milestone. She also executive produced legal drama How To Get Away With Murder. In 2017, she left network television to exclusively produce content with Netflix, a partnership which has resulted in the worldwide mega-hit Bridgerton as well as Inventing Anna, Queen Charlotte and The Residence. Throughout her career Rhimes has consistently pushed boundaries, championed diverse voices and elevated television as an artform, while her 20-year tenure as CEO of Shondaland has established her as both creative genius and cultural architect, inspiring a new generation of storytellers worldwide. Through The Rhimes Foundation and her service on multiple non-profile boards, Shonda's influence extends beyond entertainment, supporting arts, education, and social justice. Her book Year of Yes, marking its 10th anniversary, has inspired a global movement for change, encouraging millions to embrace courage, authenticity, and creative risk-taking. She has three times been included in the TIME 100 list of most influential people and has been awarded an OBE for her service to US / UK relations. After receiving the award, Rhimes will take part in an on stage interview to discuss her work and career.

This year, the Festival's Outstanding Achievement Award is proudly presented to Sir Lenny Henry - comedian, actor, writer, producer, national icon, and all-round legend with a career so vast it's practically its own genre. From his teenage debut on New Faces (wearing a suit several sizes too big and a grin even bigger), to becoming one of the most recognisable and beloved figures in British entertainment, Sir Lenny has been making us laugh, think and cheer for five brilliant decades. Whether splattered with custard on Tiswas, side-eyeing sketch partners in Three of a Kind, or commanding the screen in The Rings of Power, Broadchurch, Chef! and The Witcher: Blood Origin, he's always done it with style, substance, and a wicked sense of humour. Knighted in 2015 for services to drama and charity, Sir Lenny's genius isn't just in the performance, it's in the purpose. Through his production company Esmerelda, he's championed new voices and told stories that matter. As co-founder of Comic Relief, he's helped raise over £1 billion (and worn more red noses than most of us have hot dinners). And with the Centre for Media Diversity at Birmingham City University, he continues to create space for others to shine. This award celebrates not just his immense talent, but the joy, heart and trailblazing spirit that make Sir Lenny Henry utterly, gloriously one of a kind.

In today's saturated content landscape, creating a brilliant show is only half the battle - the other half is ensuring it gets seen. Marketing spend across broadcasters and streamers has exploded as they battle to cut through with new show launches and drive brand consideration. But is it really all about the size of the budget? Is there a recipe for success and how can producers and commissioners best support Marketing and Comms teams to deliver campaigns that translate into viewing figures? This panel will tackle one of the most pressing issues of our time. With declining levels of trust in the mainstream media, the assaults on the free press and burgeoning misinformation, we ask how TV should respond: How do we engage audiences? How does the TV industry and TV journalism stand up to this challenge? And how can we be brave and take risks in the current climate? A panel of leading filmmakers and journalists will discuss these urgent issues.

This isn't a panel. It's a reality check. As inclusion is quietly deprioritised across the industry, The Forum invites open testimony, uncomfortable truths, and lived experience-not PR lines. No badges. No spin. Just real talk about what's being rolled back, who's staying silent, and why. If you've ever felt erased or told to stay grateful, this is your space. And if you hold power, come ready to listen. Not defend. Just listen.
PLEASE NOTE THIS SESSION IS OFF-THE-RECORD AND CLOSED TO PRESS.
